Disclosure: PricePing makes this guide, and the last section is about the PricePing app. PricePing is not made by Amazon and is not affiliated with it. Amazon’s policies are paraphrased from Amazon’s own help pages for each store, checked on October 20, 2026 (see Sources). Amazon can change them, and the product page and your order always have the final word.
The short answer
Usually, you can’t get the difference back. Amazon’s help pages on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ca, Amazon.de and Amazon.ae all say Amazon doesn’t offer price matching, and none of them describes a refund when a price falls after you buy. Two things do hold: a pre-order that shows Amazon’s Pre-order Price Guarantee is charged the lowest price Amazon offers up to release day, and most items can be returned within Amazon’s return window (30 days of delivery on Amazon.com, 15 days for most items on Amazon.ae), after which you can order again at the new price.
What Amazon says about price matching
Amazon.com’s help page says Amazon compares its prices with competitors’ to keep them low and, as a result, doesn’t offer price matching compensation. Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ca and Amazon.ae say the same, and Amazon.de’s page says it offers no price guarantee compensation. None of these pages describes a refund when Amazon’s own price drops after you buy.
You may read about a 7-day refund for price drops. Amazon’s help pages we checked today don’t offer one. Some shoppers report asking customer service for a goodwill credit; Amazon’s pages don’t promise one, so treat it as a request, not a right.
The exception: pre-orders
On Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ca and Amazon.de, a pre-order that shows the Pre-order Price Guarantee message is charged the lowest price that Amazon store offered between your order and the release date (the end of release day on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.ca). It is automatic; you don’t have to ask. It covers only items sold by Amazon itself, not other sellers’ offers, and only items whose product page shows the message. On Amazon.com it doesn’t cover lower prices that need you to join a programme.
Marketplace by marketplace
| Store | Price drop after you buy | Pre-order Price Guarantee | Usual return window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon.com (US) | No price matching compensation | Yes, on qualifying items sold by Amazon.com | Most items within 30 days of delivery |
| Amazon.co.uk | No price matching compensation | Yes, on qualifying items sold by Amazon.co.uk | Most items within 30 days, plus a 14-day legal right to cancel |
| Amazon.ca | No price matching | Yes, on qualifying items sold by Amazon.ca | Most items within 30 days of delivery |
| Amazon.de | No price guarantee compensation | Yes, on qualifying items sold by Amazon.de | 30-day returns guarantee for many items, plus a 14-day legal right of withdrawal |
| Amazon.ae | No price matching | We found no pre-order guarantee page | Most items within 15 days of delivery; some categories 30 |
Return windows vary by category and seller, so check the product page or your order before you count on one. We didn’t check other Amazon stores; look for the Pricing and Returns pages in their help centres.
What you can do when the price drops
- Check whether it was a pre-order. If the product page showed the Pre-order Price Guarantee, Amazon adjusts the price for you.
- Check your return window. Your order shows the return-by date. Amazon.com allows 30 days of delivery for most items; Amazon.ae allows 15 days for most items.
- Work out whether a return pays. Free returns aren’t universal: on Amazon.co.uk, for example, a return that isn’t free costs from £1.99. Items must come back in the condition you received them, and on Amazon.com returning an item that was part of a discount qualification reduces the refund.
- Make sure the new price is real. Check that the cheaper offer is sold by Amazon or a seller you trust, and in stock, before you send anything back.
- Return, then reorder through Your Orders, or decide the difference isn’t worth the trouble.
Amazon’s own price tools
In the US, Amazon’s pricing help page says its shopping assistant, Alexa for Shopping, can show up to a year of a product’s price history and set price alerts. If you only shop on Amazon.com, that is worth a look. Keepa and camelcamelcamel also show long Amazon price histories; see the Keepa alternative and the camelcamelcamel alternative pages for how they compare.
How PricePing helps
Since Amazon won’t refund a drop, the cheapest fix is to buy at the right moment. PricePing, the price tracker app for iPhone and Android, tracks Amazon stores in many countries, including Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ca, Amazon.de and Amazon.ae, in each store’s own currency:
- Before you buy: share the product from the Amazon app or Safari, set a Below a price alert at what you would pay, and buy when the ping comes.
- After you buy: keep it on Any drop until your return window closes. If a ping comes in time, you can decide whether a return is worth it.
PricePing’s price history starts the day you add a product, and it checks at least once a day, so a lightning deal can come and go between checks. For the full steps, see the Amazon price tracker app guide.
PricePing’s limits, honestly
- It is a subscription with no free tier. Monthly plans start with a 7-day free trial; yearly plans don’t have one.
- Price history starts when you add a product. It can’t show what the price was last year.
- Prices are checked at least once a day, not every second, so alerts are not instant.
Questions
Will Amazon refund the difference if the price drops after I buy?
Generally no. Amazon’s help pages on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ca, Amazon.de and Amazon.ae, checked on October 20, 2026, all say Amazon does not offer price matching or price matching compensation. The exception is a pre-order covered by Amazon’s Pre-order Price Guarantee.
Does Amazon still have a 7-day price protection policy?
Not that its help pages describe. You may read that Amazon refunds a drop within 7 days of purchase, but none of the Amazon help pages we checked on October 20, 2026 offers one. Amazon’s US page says plainly that it does not offer price matching compensation.
What is Amazon’s Pre-order Price Guarantee?
On qualifying pre-orders that show the Pre-order Price Guarantee message, Amazon charges the lowest price it offered between your order and the release date. It applies only to items sold by Amazon itself, not by other sellers, and Amazon applies it automatically.
Can I return an Amazon item and buy it again at the lower price?
Amazon’s return policy lets you return most items within its return window, which is 30 days of delivery on Amazon.com and 15 days for most items on Amazon.ae. Whether a return and a new order is worth it depends on return costs, the item’s condition and whether the lower price is still there when you reorder.
How can I avoid paying more than I need to on Amazon?
Track the product before you buy and wait for a price you are happy with. PricePing, the price tracker app for iPhone and Android, sends a push notification when a check finds a drop that matches your alert, and it keeps tracking after you buy, so you can tell whether a drop came inside your return window.
